Principal Investigator
Anna Greenwald, Ph.D (she/her)
Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology, GUMC
Associate Staff Member, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine/Research, MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital
Education and Training:
Visiting Scholar, Center for Visual Science at the University of Rochester, New York
PhD, Psychology, University of Giessen, Germany
Postdoctoral Fellowship, Department of Neuroscience, GUMC
Dr. Greenwald leads the RHECO Lab and is a Co-Investigator on the Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery's Pediatric Stroke Research Project. Her research has spanned a variety of topics related to visual and auditory perception, attention, and brain plasticity.
Dr. Greenwald uses behavioral and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods to investigate human perception, attention, and emotion, their neural basis, and their impairment in neurological disorders. The long-term goal of her research is to develop novel tools for assessing and treating these impairments. Her research has been supported by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health.
Research Staff
Research Specialist
Education:
2021 BS, Psychology, University of Minnesota
Kasey is a research specialist in both the RHECO and Newport labs. She's interested in cognition and mental health across the lifespan and is currently pursuing a MS in Epidemiology at Georgetown University. In the world outside of research, she enjoys spending time with her two cats, chasing waterfalls, and reading in the sun.
Lab Manager
Education:
2022 BA, Cognitive Science & Psychology, University of Virginia
Sarah Haile is the lab manager for the RHECO lab. She is interested in mental health and psychology, especially in trauma and emotion. She hopes to study and pursue a career in clinical psychology down the road. Outside of the lab, she enjoys reading, trying new food, and watching movies with friends.
Clinical Research Coordinator
Education:
2024 BS, Clinical Neuroscience, Virginia Tech
Meron Frew is the Clinical Research Coordinator for RHECO and affiliated labs. She is interested in the disease mechanisms of neurological diseases and their impact on cognitive function. She hopes to gain some research experience before deciding on grad school. In her free time, playing chess, painting, watching food content and trying new recipes.
Post-Doctoral Scholars
Postdoctoral Scholar, Department of Neurology, Georgetown University Medical Center Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science
Education:
2011 B.A., Linguistics, University of Georgia
2011 B.A., International Affairs, University of Georgia
2017 M.A., Linguistics, California State University - Northridge
2022 Ph.D., Linguistics, New York University
Dr. Sarah Phillips is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the RHECO Lab, supported by the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS). Her research focuses on developing neurobiologically grounded models of language that account for diverse linguistic experiences (bilingualism, bidialectalism). In the lab, she is working with Dr. Greenwald to develop raciolinguistically sensitive materials for an improved emotion recognition test that can be used with stroke survivors. Outside of the lab, she also works as a photographer who shoots and develops film.
Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Sarah Joseph is a student research assistant for the RHECO lab. She is currently a student at Georgetown University studying Biology with a Psychology minor. She is very interested in recovery and rehabilitation after strokes. Prior to joining the lab, Sarah has done research on pediatric cancer survivorship. Outside of lab, she is a huge reader, an EMT, a novice knitter, and a student teacher at Georgetown's daycare!
Research Volunteer
Regan Hau is a volunteer at the RHECO lab helping with the Visuospatial Deficits after Stroke project. She is a rising junior at Colgate University studying Neuroscience and Spanish. She is interested in language acquisition and recovery after strokes, and she plans on pursuing a master's degree or Ph.D. to become a researcher in the future. In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, solving the NYT puzzles, and going on walks with friends.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Amelia Laroski is an undergraduate research assistant. She is a freshman at Georgetown University. She is interested in studying Neurobiology and exploring how emotional function is impacted after stroke. Prior to joining the lab, Amelia was a researcher for the Whitman Journal of Psychology and volunteered with Dance for Parkinson's Disease. Outside of the lab, Amelia enjoys volunteering at Arlington Free Clinic and dancing ballet!
